HB 94

This bill provides insurance coverage for the costs associated with the harvesting and storage for up to one year of certain biological issues necessary for future in vitro fertilization for those individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer, lupus, or sickle cell. Treatment for these diagnoses typically involves radiation, which renders the patient infertile. The bill does not cover the cost of in vitro fertilization but covers the cost of harvesting and storing the biological materials necessary for future in vitro fertilization.

The bill passes committee.

HB 87

This bill aims to change the definition of medical necessity deemed by law for Orthotics and Prosthetics. Prosthetics and Orthotics for toileting, showering, playing on a playground, participating in adaptive sports, running, and biking are not currently covered by insurance. If a licensed prosthesis or orthotist mentions in their recommendation for the patient that the device will help with anything related to these activities, insurance will not cover it.

HB 87 follows three guiding principles for allowing insurance to cover these devices.

  1. The specific needs of each individual must be assessed by the licensed Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist (CPO) and treating physician to determine the most appropriate prosthetic or orthotics device.
  2. The need is determined based on the individual’s goals, desires, and needs to improve their total quality of life.
  3. The CPO will focus on how the device can improve the individual’s ability to safely function in their daily life and participate in society.

This bill was only being heard, not voted on yet. It was deferred for a fiscal assessment.
